About this adventure

Year 3 and 4 Spelling Words is a free interactive game that teaches children aged 7–9 the statutory word list from the UK National Curriculum, with a memory trick for every word. Children fly with Nova the word robot to nine planets, each teaching one spelling strategy through hands-on puzzles.

They scan words for hidden words (a rat in separate), tap word chunks in a slow 'spelling voice' to hear quiet letters, and find silent letters in island and knowledge. They learn why c says s before e, i or y, spot double letters in address, and meet the letter groups ough, augh and eigh.

Later planets cover root words (actual to actually), putting words in alphabetical order to check spellings in a dictionary, and the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check routine. A Star Chart lists the words with their tricks, and a final challenge mixes questions from every planet.

Questions and answers

What are the Year 3 and 4 statutory spelling words?

They are a list of 100 words in the UK National Curriculum that children should learn to spell by the end of Year 4. Many, such as February, separate, island and though, don't follow the usual spelling patterns, so children need extra tricks to remember them.

How can I help my child remember tricky spellings like separate?

Give each word a memory trick, such as spotting 'a rat' in separate or 'a lie' in believe. Saying the word slowly in chunks and practising with Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check also helps the spelling stick.

Why does February have an r that we don't hear?

Many people say February quickly, so the first r goes quiet, but it has always been written. Saying the word in chunks, Feb-ru-ar-y, in a slow 'spelling voice' helps children hear and remember that r.

What age is this Year 3 and 4 spelling game for?

It is made for children aged 7 to 9 in Years 3 and 4 of primary school (Key Stage 2). Older children who still mix up words like separate, although or business can also use it for revision.

What does the game include, and how long does it take?

It has nine short chapters, a Star Chart of all the words with their memory tricks, and a 10-question Galaxy Challenge. Playing everything takes about 50 minutes, and children can start any chapter from the galaxy map.
