About this adventure
Types of Sentences on Sentence Island is a free interactive game that teaches children aged 6β8 the four types of sentences and how to join ideas with because, when and if. Pip the puffin guides each step with one short spoken instruction, and a pointing hand shows what to tap or drag.
Players build every sentence before learning its name. They make a crab dig a hole to create a statement, add a capital letter and a full stop, open a shell by asking a question, and watch a whale leap to make an exclamation starting with What. Captain Boss gives commands, and players find each bossy (imperative) verb.
They sort sentences to the right pal and build bridges with the joining words (conjunctions) because, when and if. Words are highlighted as they are read aloud, hints help after a mistake, and each island ends with a sticker.
Questions and answers
What are the four types of sentences?
The four types of sentences are statements, questions, exclamations and commands. A statement tells you something, a question asks something, an exclamation shows a strong feeling, and a command tells someone what to do.
What is an exclamation sentence in Year 2?
In Year 2, an exclamation sentence starts with What or How, includes a verb and ends with an exclamation mark. Examples are "What a huge whale that is!" and "How tall the palm is!"
How do you use because, when and if in a sentence?
Because, when and if are conjunctions that join two ideas into one longer sentence. Because gives a reason, when tells you the time something happens, and if tells you something might happen, as in "We can swim if the sea is calm."
What age is this types of sentences game for?
The game is made for children aged 6 to 8 and matches the Year 2 English grammar and punctuation curriculum in England (KS1). Every instruction is read aloud, so children who are still learning to read can play too.
How long does Sentence Island take to play and what does it include?
Playing everything takes about 25 minutes across six short islands. They cover statements, questions, exclamations, commands, a sentence-sorting party and joining words. Each island is a guided, hands-on walkthrough that ends with a sticker, and progress is saved so children can continue later.
